[1st Attempt] [Carbon Skeeter] [Kolibri] [LeTTO] [Mala Bdzhola I]
[Micro IFO] [Micro Kolibri] [Minor] [Trenton Terror] [Kits]

Carbon Skeeter is my lightest plane to date. It makes use of Dynamics Unlimited's RFFS100 radio system. The plane is loosely based on the all balsa Lil' Skeeter plane whose plans come with the system, hence the name.

Construction details:
Carbon Skeeter is built pretty much the same as my other carbon planes. The wing is made out of a 94cm (37in) long, 1mm (0.04in) diameter carbon rod. The rod overlaps about 2cm (0.8in) in the center of the trailing edge where the two ends of the rod are connected. It is covered with Reynolds crystal wrap. I used SpiderWire to give the wing its shape and dihedral.

The fuselage is an 28cm (11in) long, 1.5mm (0.06in) diameter carbon rod. I used 0.8mm (1/32in) light ply to attach the wing to the fuselage, the carbon rod that runs down the center of the wing from leading edge to trailing edge has a 1mm (0.04in) diameter. I glued the light ply to the fuselage stick and center wing rod. To ensure the wing and fuselage would stay together, I added a loop of SpiderWire. The landing gear is 0.5mm (0.02in) steel wire, and some plastic free flight wheels. I glued the wire to the carbon fuselage stick and then wrapped it with dental floss and soaked it with thin CA. The wheels are relatively heavy (0.8g) and I could probably shave some weight off it I would go to balsa wheels instead. See the image below for a close up of the wing and landing gear attachment.

Close up to show wing and landing gear attachment detail

Both the horizontal and vertical tails are made of 0.8mm (1/32in) balsa, the lightest I had around. The rudder on the vertical is made out of thick paper.

The motor is a modified KP00 propulsion system. I hacked most of the gearbox off and shortened the prop shaft, I also cut away part of the sleeve of the larger gear. I was able to cut the weight of the system down by about a gram.
